Students in Grade 12 continue with General Mathematics or Advanced Mathematics they streamed in Grade 11. In General Mathematics, the emphasis is on the main maths topics learnt in Grades 9, 10 and 11. Whereas in Advanced Mathematics, the students are introduced to new (and extended) topics they are likely to study at tertiary institutions.

## Mathematics learning structure

The upper primary and secondary mathematics structure starts from the broad content areas. Teachers and instructors use this structure to plan around it. Students doing distance learning must know about the structure:

- core maths content
- > modules/units
- > topics, and
- > learning objectives.

## Grade 12 maths modular units: Adv & Gen

Knowing the Distance Learning Modular Units and topics is vital. It helps the students to track the content they covered and what needs covering to complete the module. It can be helpful as it puts learning in perspective.

We feel that the modular units outlined in the table is an important document. Students can it use as a study guide or when revising for the Grade 12 General and or Advanced mathematics examination at the end of the year.

## Grade 12 maths modular units: mainstream schools vs distance mode

The mathematics syllabus for the mainstream schools and distance learning are similar with minor variations.

tiary institutionsIt is perhaps benefitial to note that GM and AM determines the school leavers’ choices for tertiary institutions. Choose the maths that compliments the course you wish to study at ter

## Distance learning maths modular units (Advanced and General Maths)

In the FODE course booklet PDF, there 5 General Maths and 3 Advanced Maths modular units. Each modular unit is divided into 4 topics (some 3 topics) and each topic is subdivided into lessons.

The resource material contains the:

- Exercises,
- Practice Questions, and
- a Summary of Lessons.

Note that the answers to the Practice Questions are usually given at the end of the main strand.

## Submit assignments and assessments

Each module has one assignment. For example, in the 5 gen maths main modular units in the Grade 12 FODE course, students will do 5 assignments. Here is FODE’s expectation:

Students will study Module 1 and do Assignment 1 at the same time. Then, they will study Module 2 and do Assignment 2 at the same time, and so on up to Module 5 and Assignment 5.

When you have completed your assignment for each modular unit, you must submit it immediately for marking.

FODE is flexible about when to submit your completed assignment. But as a self-paced student, you should aim to complete your work and submit it promptly to your study centre for marking.

Students who are studying at a registered Study Centre must give their completed assignments to their Supervisor for marking. Other students who study at home or in the provinces must send their completed assignments to their Provincial Study Centres for marking.

The study centres are also where students follow up on their assessment marks.

## Grade 12 Advanced and General maths exam questions and answers

The mathematics contents taught at Grade 11 and 12 in the mainstream schools and distance learning modes are similar. There is not much difference. Distance learning students can use the past **Advanced and General mathematics exam questions and answers **as revision questions.

.Here is how you can get the past maths exam questions

Students who wish to get practise maths questions and answers can download the question booklet➡️: **Grade 12 AM and GM past exam papers, PDF**. Though the papers are from mainstream schools, they are also the best questions to practise for your mathematics examination.

## Grade 12 mathematics learning gaps

The mathematics topics continue from Grades 9 and 10. That is why it is important to understand the lower secondary mathematics topics before moving on to Grade 11 and 12. Not mastering the necessary maths skills at Grade 9 and 10 can be a concern. But, there are resources available here.

In Grade 11 Mathematics, there are 5 material aids or PDF books for students. Each module corresponds to the core mathematics unit students are expected to study via the distance learning mode. And further broken down into topics, **FODE info page.**

## A FODE student success story

We feature an inspiring story from a FODE student who made it through flexible, open and distance education. His name is George. He left his village and came to Port Moresby without completing Grade 9.

George enrolled at FODE and made his way into mainstream boys secondary school in Port Moresby, went to the University of Papua New Guinea, and graduated with a bachelors degree.

If you are looking for a success story, **here is George’s story**.

## FODE application and enrollment info
