If you’re a Year 7 student, you’ll learn about what to expect, find out about the maths test topics and download the Year 7 maths test paper with answers PDF.

What to expect in your maths test?

Your maths teachers usually set the test from the easier question to the hardest.

Where there are extended response questions, you’ll see the easier ones at the top and the harder ones at the bottom.

No working out may be required for the one-mark questions.

Only write the answers clearly on the space provided. Include the units where necessary.

How do teachers mark your maths tests?

Most questions will require working out whereas others will ask for reasoning. They are higher-order questions, therefore do them properly.

Show all working out on the spaces provided.

Your teacher will give you marks, known as the PROCESS MARKS, for the solutions as well as the right answer (ACCURACY MARKS). Even if you get the answer wrong, you may still get marked for showing the correct steps.

The Year 7 maths test marks range from 30 – 50. You’ll be required to do them in just one period, 40 or 50 minutes.

Some end-of-the-year tests do often have more than 50 marks and can take up to two periods in duration time.

Why read the test instruction carefully?

Your teacher will expect you to do certain things to get full marks. These expectations are often given in the instructions. So, it is important to know what you are expected to do prior to doing the test.

Here is an example of instructions you are likely to see on your Year 7 maths test papers.

Take note of the last instruction, that’s where most of the marks come from.

  • You may use a calculator.
  • Read all questions carefully.
  • You will be given tracing paper.
  • You have 50 minutes to complete this test.
  • Show all working in the space provided.

Year 7 maths tests best practices

Do not spend too much time on one question if you find it very hard to do. Go on and answer the other questions.

Then come back and attempt the hard question at the end when you have time. Always take a quick look at the number of questions and the total time you have for completing them. This will give you a general idea of how much time you should spend on one question.

For example, if you have 50 minutes to do 40 test questions, that is 1.25 minutes on each question. Some questions may take less time, but all in all, you should not spend 2 minutes on one question.

By doing this, you’ll have time to answer all the questions, do the proof-checks and go over the harder questions.
